Our Ultrasound Program Mission
The LAG DEM Ultrasound Program is committed to making point-of-care ultrasound practical, approachable, and useful at the bedside. Through hands-on scanning, image review, didactics, and real-time feedback, we help learners build confidence in image acquisition, interpretation, and clinical application.
Our curriculum focuses on core emergency ultrasound applications and is aligned with national recommendations from ACEP and SAEM.
Annual Emergency Medicine Course
Each June, LA General + USC hosts an 8-hour emergency ultrasound course for incoming residents, combining focused lectures with hands-on scanning using live models. The course introduces core POCUS applications and builds comfort, image acquisition skills, and confidence before residents begin clinical practice.
PGY-2 and Senior Electives
During the PGY-2 year, residents complete a two-week emergency ultrasound rotation with proctored scanning shifts, direct faculty feedback, and continued development in core and advanced POCUS applications.
Residents also participate in scholarly review, case presentation, and ultrasound-guided procedures when available. Senior residents may complete an additional two-week elective tailored to advanced applications, procedures, education, QA, or research.

USC-Keck SOM 4th Year Emergency Ultrasound Rotation:
Each month, 1-2 students can rotate in the emergency ultrasound elective, working closely with ultrasound faculty and residents during multiple proctored shifts. Applications are through USC-Keck School of Medicine.
LAGMC + USC Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship:
The Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship at LAGMC+USC Medical Center started in 2011. Over the one-year program, fellows receive intensive training and conduct specialized scan shifts each month with faculty, leading to weekly review sessions. They gain experience in teaching, research, conference coordination, and ultrasound program management. Applications are accepted via SCUF. LAGMC participates in NRMP fellowship match.
